Watching your child struggle with worry, school refusal, or fear of being judged can feel overwhelming and isolating, but relief is possible. At Invictus Counseling, our counselors specialize in anxiety and anxiety-related challenges in children and teens, and bring advanced training, ongoing supervision, and access to expert consultation to every step of treatment.

Our approach is practical, evidence-based, and tailored to your child's unique needs, using proven methods including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), iCBT, anxiety sensitivity work, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), all provided in a compassionate, supportive environment.

UNDERSTANDING ANXIETY IN CHILDREN & TEENS

Some worry is a normal part of growing up. When anxiety starts showing up as stomachaches before school, meltdowns over homework, avoiding friends, or refusing to go to class, it may be more than a phase. Children and teens often express anxiety through behavior rather than words, which can look like irritability, avoidance, or constant reassurance seeking. Our counselors work with children, teens, and families ages 5 and up, helping young people understand what anxiety is doing and build skills they can use at school, at home, and with friends.

Family Help

Anxiety affects the whole family. Parents often find themselves answering the same questions, adjusting routines, or stepping in to make the worry go away, which brings short-term relief but can keep the cycle going. We work with parents and caregivers directly, giving you practical ways to respond to anxiety, reduce accommodation, and support your child's progress at home.

School Refusal

School refusal often starts with physical complaints, morning distress, or repeated requests to stay home. It's usually driven by anxiety rather than defiance. Counseling focuses on identifying what's being avoided and building a gradual, structured plan to return to school, working with parents and, where helpful, the school.

Social Anxiety

Social anxiety in young people can look like fear of speaking in class, avoiding group activities, worrying about being judged, or withdrawing from friends. Counseling helps children and teens gradually build confidence in social situations and reduce the avoidance that keeps the fear in place.

Test Anxiety

Test anxiety can cause a blank mind during exams, physical symptoms like nausea or a racing heart, and avoidance of studying or test days altogether. Counseling helps students manage the physical side of anxiety, challenge the pressure-driven thoughts behind it, and perform closer to their actual ability.

HOW  ANXIETY CAN IMPACT A CHILD'S EVERYDAY LIFE

Artboard 40_4x.png

Anxiety can affect much more than a single moment of worry. Many children and teens begin avoiding school, activities, sleepovers, or social situations where anxiety has shown up before. Over time, this avoidance can greatly limit their confidence, friendships, and independence.

Recognizing how anxiety and avoidance are affecting your child's daily life is an important first step. Our counselors help families develop practical strategies to reduce anxiety and help young people regain confidence, calm, and control.
