Living with the effects of a difficult or frightening experience can feel overwhelming and isolating. Intrusive memories, nightmares, and feeling constantly on guard can make everyday life exhausting. You may find yourself avoiding places, people, or conversations connected to what happened. That avoidance can feel like relief in the moment, but it often keeps symptoms in place over time.

At Invictus Counseling, our counselors specialize in anxiety and anxiety-related challenges, and several of our clinicians bring additional training in trauma and PTSD. Trauma work is a sub-specialty that varies by clinician, so we'll match you with a therapist whose training fits your needs.

Using proven methods including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), iCBT, anxiety sensitivity work, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), we help you reduce the hold these experiences have on you. We move at a pace you feel ready for, in a compassionate, supportive environment.

WHAT IS TRAUMA & PTSD?

Difficult experiences affect people differently. For some, the effects fade with time. For others, they linger as intrusive memories, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, or avoidance of anything connected to what happened.

When these symptoms persist and interfere with daily life, it may be

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Trauma can also heighten the

body's threat response, making everyday situations feel unsafe.

Trauma can affect relationships, work, sleep, and your overall sense of safety. The good news is that these symptoms can be reduced with

practical, evidence-based therapy.

Post-Traumatic Stress

Post-traumatic stress can involve intrusive memories or flashbacks, nightmares and disrupted sleep, and feeling constantly on guard. Many people also feel emotionally numb and avoid reminders of the event. Counseling helps you understand these responses, reduce their grip, and gradually re-engage with what you've been avoiding.

Trauma & Anxiety

Past experiences often shape present-day anxiety. Trauma can heighten the body's threat response, fueling panic, avoidance, or constant scanning for danger. Because we specialize in anxiety, our clinicians are well positioned to address where trauma and anxiety overlap.

OUR EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACH TO TRAUMA & PTSD TREATMENT

ACCEPTANCE & COMMITMENT THERAPY (ACT) & iCBT
These approaches engage the cognitive side of how anxiety and trauma affect your mental wellness. They help you respond differently to difficult thoughts and memories.

EXPOSURE & RESPONSE PREVENTION (ERP)
ERP helps you gradually and safely face avoided memories, places, and situations. You set the pace, and your therapist discusses the approach with you before starting.

ANXIETY SENSITIVITY WORK
Trauma often leaves people fearful of physical sensations, such as a racing heart or feeling on edge. Anxiety sensitivity work reduces that fear so the sensations lose their hold.
COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)
CBT helps you identify and challenge the thought patterns that keep trauma symptoms in place. It often includes goal-oriented exercises and practice between sessions so you make real progress.
