UNDERSTANDING PERFECTIONISM & OCPD

Setting high standards is common. When self-imposed rules, exhausting routines, and the pressure to get things right begin taking up significant time and energy, these perfecting behaviors can make everyday life harder than it needs to be.

Our counselors help you understand the patterns behind these behaviors, reduce the discomfort that comes with leaving things imperfect, and build more flexible ways of responding. If your concerns center on things needing to feel "just right," symmetry, or order, visit our OCD Counseling page.

Perfection
OCPD

Perfectionism can show up as self-imposed rules, exhausting routines, excessive time spent on tasks, and difficulty finishing anything that doesn't feel good enough. For some, it also connects with people-pleasing and a fear of criticism or failure. Counseling can help you recognize these patterns and build more flexible ways of responding to them.

OCPD (Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder) involves rigid, self-imposed rules, an intense focus on order and control, and routines that are difficult to step away from. It can affect work, relationships, and the ability to delegate or adapt. Our clinicians work with OCPD and perfecting behaviors using evidence-based approaches designed to help you loosen these patterns and regain control of your time and energy.

HOW HEALTH PERFECTIONISM CAN IMPACT EVERYDAY LIFE

ChatGPT Image Sep 24, 2026, 04_49_22 PM.png

Perfectionism can affect much more than a single task. Because things rarely feel good enough, many people begin over-checking, over-preparing, procrastinating, or avoiding situations where they might fall short. Over time, this can greatly limit one's time, energy, and relationships.

Recognizing how perfecting behaviors are affecting your daily life is an important first step. Our counselors help you develop practical strategies to step out of patterns that no longer serve you and regain confidence, calm, and control.
